Overview: The General Electric J79 is an iconic turbojet engine that was at the forefront of innovation during its time, breaking speed records for fighter jets and bombers. The engineering behind the GE J79 is among the many technological feats that form the backbone of innovation in aerospace engineering. My goal is to manufacture and fabricate a model of the GE J79, with the scope of this project being to eventually teach myself computational fluid dynamics (CFD) based on a stator and rotor blade assembly.Â
What:
Manufactured and fabricated a 1:12 scale GE J79 turbojet engine
How:
Used material extrusion with PETG to manufacture the jet engine nacelle, shaft, and exhaust nozzle
Used powder bed fusion with titanium to manufacture stator and rotor blades
Fabricated jet engine assembly with simple hardware
Results:
Developed a working GE J79 engine (shaft spins)
